Vertigo

My last Hitchcock cut out and my last cut out altogether at Bath School of Art and Design! We start setting up for assessments tomorrow...getting VERY nervous now! This one is to pair up with Rear Window.

The Birds

I didn't think that I would be cutting out any more flipping birds, but it turns out I have. Going with the Hitchcock series I thought it would make a lot of sense to do one themes on 'The Birds', so here it is...

Rear Window

So I'm making a mini Hitchcock victim so a classic suspense I couldn't wait to do was Rear Window. This one is slightly different as it's layered and you can actually see a colour! Shock horror.

Psycho

So, after learning from my huge mistake with the last piece, I spray painted the back first and then cut it out. This quote as you may well know is from Psycho....amazing film. I popped it in a floating frame and it works quite well?!

When A Stranger Calls

This went wrong. The quote is from the 1979 version of When A Stranger Calls. I was attempting to contrast my romantic film quotes with some horror film quotes. The idea was to keep the plain white paper on the front and have block red on the back so that it would glow on the wall...as you can see this hasn't happened with this one. I cut the quote out first and then spray painted the back red, not really thinking it through. The red went onto the front slightly, so I bought some 'shock white' spray paint to spray the front.....'shock white' isn't white, it's dark cream! Needless to say it looked awful and apparently you can't buy bright white spray paint (I tried another, which again turned out to be cream). The cream just looked so bad against a white wall that I gave up and sprayed it all red. I'm also not hugely happy about the layout so will rethink that one. So basically this one failed and I learnt to spray the back of the paper red BEFORE I cut the quote out!

Romantic Medley

So I had loads of off-cuts from the A1 romantic film quotes and thought that I may as well do something with them. I layered them all together in a floating frame, looks pretty cool in person, you can vaguely make out the different quotes. Apologies for the picture, was taken in my room!

Gone With The Wind

Ok so this piece is MASSIVE. When I went to Rob Ryan's studio for the day he asked to look at my sketch book and suggested that I do the cut out the fit the wall. So I have. It's 3 metres in length in total with the actual cut out at 1.1 x 1 m. I have to do the cuts backwards so that there is no pencil marks on the front so at the moment its the wrong way, until I figure out a way to get it down safely (this one is VERY fragile!). The piece is on a roll of fabriano, using the roll as a weight at the bottom. I'm hoping it's one of the pieces I'm going to show in our Degree Show in June. The last picture here is the piece but flipped, to get an idea of what it would look like the right way.

All Four Romantic Film Quotes

Some slightly better photographs of the A1 romantic quotes that I've made...

Old Bird Illustrations

So here are two examples of the bird illustrations that I used as templates for my bird cut outs. I found them at Walcott Market in Bath, they're single pages from a book that ,unfortunately, I can't find out the name of, or the illustrator.

A Little Something

I haven't been blogging lately due to the approaching 3rd year deadline so been panicking slightly! Thought I'd post a few little things that I've been doing etc...
